I remember several years ago I took a job in the California desert, where the temperature regularly reached the triple digits. One day with the temperature in excess 100 degrees, we went to an upscale restaurant with friends and they wanted to sit on the patio. I was shocked that they would want to sit in the heat.
I was even more amazed when we went out to the patio dining area it was at least 30 degrees cooler than the outside temperature. In fact, the patio dining area was a more comfortable temperature than the inside dining area.
This was caused by a misting system that sprayed a fine mist into the air. The mist evaporated before it reached us, and cooled the air temperature by 30 degrees. We had a great dinner, outside in the California desert, in the middle of summer. This quickly became one of our favorite restaurants to go to and to take visiting friends to.
We later moved to another location that still got extremely hot in the summer, and we missed the patio misting system of our favorite restaurant. I started wishing that we could get a system for our own patio. However, the systems, if you could find them, caused several thousand dollars.
About that time, the big box stores started carrying a misting system that was a lot less expensive (also known as cheap). These systems cost less than $200, so we got one for our patio. I hooked the system into my sprinkler system so that I would have a ready water supply and switched it on. It worked, the patio temperature dropped about 10 to 15 degrees, getting the air temperature down to about 80 degrees. Much more comfortable.
The down side, the misting system did not produce the fine mist that the upscale restaurant produced. As a result, the deck got wet, and we got wet and the furniture got wet as well. Most of the time, this was not a problem, we were a lot cooler and could turn off the misting system before we got too wet.
But we were still disappointed. We could not afford the really good system, and the inexpensive system just did not work as well.
Fortunately, there has been a lot of progress in the past fifteen years. You can get a power system now, just like the restaurants had for about one fifth of the cost. They are still expensive, but much more affordable.
They have also made a lot of progress with the misting heads and other fixtures on the less expensive systems. They now produce a much finer mist using regular house hold water pressure. So you can get the lower temperature (as much as 30 degrees lower) without the soggy mess that the old cheap systems used to make.
You need to be careful which system that you buy, some of the inexpensive systems still use the misting heads that have too large an opening that produces the big water droplets that will get you and your patio soaking wet. So it pays to shop around.

Why You Need Intermittent Mist – Reason #5
Reason 5 was: You can concentrate on other tasks, knowing the misting system is taking care of your cuttings. We all know that there are many things to do when propagating plants. Tending the compost pile, weed management, building new misting and grow beds, re-potting plants that have outgrown their current pot, potting the cuttings that have rooted, and of course, sticking more cuttings to make new plants.
Being able to concentrate on these tasks can be accomplished because the misting system will follow the program day in and day out without intervention. Aside from small incremental changes that need to be done to accommodate for the lengthening and shortening of the days as the season progresses, the system virtually runs itself.
“But,” I hear you say,”what about when it rains? I will need to turn off the mist so the cuttings don’t get too wet, right?”. Good question with a very simple answer. Maybe.
You have a few options to choose from when it comes to dealing with rain.
- You can just let the system run
- You can install a rain sensor
Why would you want to keep letting the system just continue to run? Remember what the reason #5 is; So you can concentrate on other tasks. Physically turning the system on and of in the event of rain can become labor intensive. You would need to constantly pay attention to when the rain starts and exactly when it stops. Turning the mist system off during rain is not the critical job, turning it back on within minutes or the rain ending is. If you get caught up doing something else, and who doesn’t, you may forget to turn the misting system back on. Within minutes, the cuttings may overheat (remember reason #1, transpiration?) and die. Just letting the system continue to run will assure that the system automatically continues to mist the cuttings when the rain stops.
For folks who are under watering restrictions or are just concerned with conserving water, there is an option with the digital mist timers to install a rain sensor. This sensor is extremely easy to install. Simply mount the sensor near your misting timer and connect the wires to the circuit marked “sensor”. That is it! Two small wires that get placed under two small screws. Worried about doing the wiring because you don’t want to get shocked? No worries, the circuit is low voltage, unlike your house wiring, which means it is much safer to work on.
Once the sensor is mounted and wired, the only thing left is to calibrate it. This simply means making a small adjustment so the sensor turns off the mist timer after a specific amount of rain has fallen. You don’t want to stop the misting system from operating during a very brief shower, but you do want to turn it off during a consistent rain. Most sensors require just a simple twist of a plastic sleeve to accomplish this. The instructions will explain how to correctly calibrate the sensor.
To test your sensor, simply wait for the misting system to operate and press the plunger on the top of the rain sensor. This will interrupt the electrical signal going to the solenoids, effectively shutting the system off temporarily. Releasing the plunger will allow the system to resume misting.
Adding a rain sensor to your misting system is just one more way to be sure your system will continue to take care of your cuttings.

I saw that the local Walmart is carrying an outdoor misting system product now. It’s the Orbit ArizonaMist brand, the same product found at Home Depot and Lowe’s. We carry replacement nozzles for all of them, which you can read about in our article about replacing Lowe’s and Home Depot Misters.
Actually, it’s not a bad deal for a low-pressure misting system. For $20 or so, you get a section of tubing with five or six nozzles, similar to this one found at Amazon – Orbit ArizonaMist Outdoor Misting System Basic 3/8-Inch Cooling Set. You use the included nail-on brackets to position the tubing on your patio, then attach the end to a garden hose or to a water faucet. They also sell an extension kit, which is a ten-foot section with five nozzles. In theory, you can string together about 50 feet of these, but it depends on your water pressure whether you’ll get good results.
Misting systems like this work okay up to a point, but if you try to put too many nozzles on a low-pressure system, or if your water pressure is too low, you won’t get very good mist. The problem with low-pressure mist systems is that they don’t atomize water into small enough droplets, so instead of mist that evaporates quickly and cools the air off, what you really have is more like the spray coming from a drip sprinkler system (also made by Orbit). If it’s hot enough outside, and the humidity is low, this will be okay. Otherwise to get better results you’ll need to boost the pressure with a pump and use nozzles with a smaller orifice. Sometimes, you can improve the performance by adding a fan, or by making your own misting fan.

But too much of humidity will be an issue and people must water plants only when needed.

Intermittent Mist – Removing the Rooted Cuttings From Intermittent Mist
Successfully removing rooted cuttings from intermittent mist
What do I do after the softwood cuttings have roots?
Is this a question you find yourself asking? Well, fear not! I will explain what needs to be done to help the cuttings survive.
After the cuttings have rooted, you must decide what you are going to do with them. Will they be potted up to be sold retail or given to friends or relatives, planted in a grow bed to continue growing for a year or two and then sold bareroot or as a liner, or simply planted in your landscape for you to enjoy?
Gently remove the rooted cutting from the rooting medium. Lightly shake off any medium that is clinging to the plant. Getting all the material off is not important, but saving as much as you can will allow you to continue rooting cuttings with the same rooting media.
If the cutting will be potted up to be sold retail, pot up the cutting in an appropriate sized nursery pot. Appropriate sized means large enough for the roots to grow, but not so large that the roots get lost in the pot. Usually, with a small rooted cutting of 6 inches or so, a 1 quart pot is sufficient. Potted plants lose moisture at alarming rates, and should be watered twice a day, but you may find that you can water them only once per day with no detrimental effect on the plant.
If being planted in the landscape, they need to be acclimated to normal growing conditions. When using intermittent mist, this means gradually reducing the frequency the cuttings get water. You can safely reduce the watering frequency to twice a day for the first week. Notice I said watering frequency and not misting frequency. You are acclimating them to being watered, and weaning them from the mist. I water mine in the morning before the sun gets too intense, and in the afternoon as the sun begins to lose it’s intensity. Be sure you do not water too late in the evening or you may promote the growth of fungus and other diseases. After the first week, the cuttings can be watered once a day for a week. After the week has passed, reduce the frequency to once per week for two weeks. At this point, the plants should be established and you really should only have to water the plant during droughts.
Bareroot cuttings and liners require special handling. Look for my separate article on handling bareroot cuttings.
Following these steps with your newly rooted cuttings will improve their odds at survival.

Enhance Plant Vitality Via Use of Ionic Colloidal Silver Misting

Logically, you should not hesitate to use ionic silver on house plants or in any agricultural environment, first from an economic viewpoint as an aid to plant vitality and thus up to 30% improved yield and in particular as a non chemical pesticide, fungicide, virucide and bactericide. From a business mans return on investment consideration the ionic silver equipment can pay for itself in a matter of months. While to the average bloke using a “pharmaceutical grade” product on plants may sound like a waste, consider the real production cost is under 10 cents a gallon, which relates to under a dollar to “mist” an acre, for a superior yet chemical free biocide with pesticide benefits! Even the workers will gain, with less health problems!
A brief look at grape production indicates the mist application requirement is 1-2 gallons per acre to wet the leaves – see: mistsprayers.com for what appears to be the most logical applicator on farms. Droplets should be avoided to prevent wetting the soil too deeply for friendly bacteria in the soil would then be destroyed. Further, a dedicated spray tank should also be used, to prevent the formation of nearly non-soluble silver salts (the result of mixing with soluble minerals) as they are generally 10,000 times less bio-available then the highly reactive ions.
Evaporation of the water will leave reduced silver and or salts, which have a minor but sustained bio-benefit. In my 10,000 gallon swimming pool it took 40 gallons to reach the effective biocidal dosage (20 parts per billion) but requires only one gallon per month makeup, due to the high residual effect of the poorly soluble silver salts.
The little I know from local tomato growers is that after each rain another application of pesticides is made so there should possibly be weekly applications. Unlike chemical pesticides the ionic silver is harmless to mature insects (oligodynamic) and a great aid to plant vitality so no problem if applied often, so long as the soil is not soaked. As a minimum it should be re-applied after insect pests deposit eggs on leaves and stems, to break their life cycle.
You have to think out of the box, to realize ionic silver is ideal as a general plant health aid in addition to being an anti-pathogenic material fatal to primative life forms (including eggs). In humans, besides being biocidal it has strong anti-inflammatory effects, promotes the production of mast cells, aids DNA repair and so likely has similar benefits to plants.
You can hardly consider 5 parts per million to be concentrated so there is no risk of over use burning the leaves, just do not saturate the soil.
There is utmost safety, for if you look at our EPA’s data on silver (http//www.epa.gov/iris/subst/0099.htm#oralrfd) there is no risk of silver “overdosing” during spray applications other then the rare case of Argyria, a discolorization of the skin when absorbed in gross doses for extended periods (silver salts are photosensitive so darken after light exposure). They compute the safe daily dose (rfD) at 14 teaspoons of 5 PPM daily for 70 years!
Ionic silver vapors are routinely breathed for lung problems and in fact a Dr. Brooks Bradley cured (6) patients with “terminal lung problems” by having them breath a few ounces of ionic silver mist daily – even lung cancer responded! I routinely use an ultrasonic vaporized to breath the vapors, for persistent allergy problems. The amount a field worker would breath would be far less then a ounce and I have customers that have their whole family ingested a quart a day with no side effects! I caution all to avoid overdosing with anything, for the body reacts by more rapid excretion, reducing its effectiveness but they insist their health has never been better and have used the high dose daily for years. Reported cases of Argyria are only 8 per year according to our FDA and never from silver ions but from non-soluble silver salts that most “home generators” produce when ultra pure water (double distilled grade) is not used.

(Keep in mind, you can normally position the pump around the corner and not have to worry about the noise.) You can upgrade the misting lines to stainless steel for a more elegant look and for a more permanent misting system line that will just about last forever. Higher level systems cost more like $2000, but you do get what you pay for to a large extent.
So the bottom line is this…an investment in misting technology can get you outdoors more, expand entertainment options, and keep your guests comfortable and safe…even in the hottest places on the hottest days. Look into it!

Every household makes use of an air conditioning unit. Some people use it at night, some during the day. It all depends whether the weather is too uncomfortable during a specific time. Most instances, the air conditioning unit will be turned on to at least compensate for the discomfort. However, in days of extreme heat, an air conditioning system or unit will have a hard time circulating cool air to the area it is suppose to provide for. The air conditioning unit has to double its efforts to pump out the cool air because of its continued compensation and battle with the extreme heat from outside. Apparently, whenever this happens, the life expectancy of the unit will shorten and can end up consuming more electricity. This is true for many of your standard air conditioners especially old ones. Thankfully, there has been a breakthrough to help ease the problem and it is all going to come down to the cool-n-save air condition pre-cooling system.
The system is based on what commercial structures use. Like warehouses, factories and offices, majority of these structures have a misting system all over its air conditioning unit. If you are not familiar the logic of it all is very similar to the mist systems that you can see at entrance doors of restaurants and parks. In no less than five minutes your home may have one too.
When a cool-n-save system is installed, it is usually located above the air conditioning unit. It works to absorb heat from the air by using what they call a flash evaporation. Through this method, the room instantly cools in temperature and even if it is using water, there will be no evidence of it since it has completely evaporated. What works well with home owners is that the cool-n-save only turns on when the ac is powered as well. Both units rely on each other to provide power and water that is then thrown into the air or as mist.
Why the cool-n-save works well beyond any other standard cooling system is the fact that it is a simpler contraption compared to the regular bulky misting systems that you may have seen. For any home owner, installing a regular cooling system will definitely have to spend a lot of money because these aren’t cheap. Unlike the cool-n-save, the machine is very small and accessible, it can easily be controlled. In fact, maintenance is easy and will only require minor cleaning.
The biggest factor that benefit a home with a cool-n-save is through its effects on cooling within a room is because of its patented control valve. Electricity is hardly consumed and if ever it is turned on, the consumption can hardly be felt. As mentioned above, it turns on and closes the same time as the AC so it feels like it is only an add-on to the entire unit.

Misting For Plant Propagation

Misting For Plant Propagation
The discovery of misting was a huge turning point in plant propagation. Prior to misting, plant propagators had very few reliable ways of asexual propagation. One common method was to take a cutting of a plant, stick it in moist sand, and place a glass jar over it. The jar would let in light and retain moisture around the cutting. This method does work, but the success rate was not high. Plants would burn if too much sun penetrated the glass. The glass would concentrate and intensify the light ( think magnifying glass) which would burn tender cuttings. Another drawback was fungus. Fungus thrives in moist environments. Having the cuttings under glass with no air movement to help dry it off, usually meant the cutting would die from too much moisture. Frequent removal of the glass helped to replace the stale moist air with fresh air, but was very labor intensive with large numbers of cuttings.
Later, it was discovered that if the cuttings were misted frequently by hand throughout the day, greater success was achieved. Again, very labor intensive.
Misting systems allowed propagators to keep the cuttings moist, but not overly wet, and saved considerable time. Cuttings are usually placed out in the open or an open enclosure, not under a sealed enclosure, which allows the circulation of fresh air which the plants require for it’s respiration, cooling, drying, and watering requirements. Because of the automation, many more cuttings could be done at one time.
All mist kits have the same basic components.
A timer to turn the system on and off daily.
A timer to control the misting duration and frequency.
A transformer to reduce the voltage to the voltage the solenoid requires. Please note that transformers and solenoids are AC voltage and others are DC voltage! Voltage for the solenoid and transformer
MUST be the same!
A solenoid valve that controls the flow of the water to the mist heads.
A reliable water supply.
A reliable electrical supply.
A manifold to carry the water to the misting heads
mist heads to spray a fine mist over the cuttings
A simple misting setup would be assembled as follows: A 24 hour timer set up to turn the system on in the morning, and off in the evening. This timer can be hard wired to an electrical circuit, or a simple plug can be installed to facilitate the systems remove for the winter. The 24 hour timer is wired to another timer that controls the duration and frequency if misting. This frequency varies from geographical location and season, but a 10 minute frequency with a 6 second duration is a good place to start. This in turn is wired to a step down transformer that reduces the voltage to what the solenoid requires. If in question, a competent electrician should be sought. The transformer is then wired to the solenoid. The solenoid will need fittings installed so a common garden hose can be attached. Proper installation of these fittings is essential for the solenoid to work properly. The solenoid is DIRECTIONAL, meaning there is an IN and an OUT. Next, the outlet of the solenoid is attached to a PVC manifold that will carry the water to the mist heads. The connection of these heads can be done a few ways depending on the application. Some are suspended from overhead, others are simply attached to a manifold on the ground and raised to allow the spray to cover the cuttings. One option I recommend for the system is a filter. Small particulates will clog the solenoid or render your mist heads inoperable. The cost of a filter is far less than the frustration from losing cuttings due to a plugged head.
Modern technology has given us even better equipment than the two separate timers mentioned. The transformer can also be eliminated due to the fact that it is built into the timing unit. One timer in particular will operate six completely separate stations. This means you could have six separate mist beds, six different irrigation zones, or a combination of the two; one mist zone and up to five irrigation zones. This comes in quite handy, if you have a mist bed and potted plants, grow beds, perennial gardens, or anything else you need watered.
For areas that do not have electricity readily available, there are also units that are strictly battery operated.

How Do You Cool A Swimming Pool?
The temperature has been a sweltering 103 degrees for a week. Luckily, you dont install tar and gravel roofs for a living, your car is air conditioned, and when you get home, all or part of it is air conditioned. But when you go to take that refreshing dip in your pool, you end up basting in 25,000 gallons of braising liquid.
Do you try to cool the pool or use it as a crock pot?
Let’s try cooling it off first with these four suggestions that varying widely by price and practicality.
Pool Heat Pump
Yes, it is possible to cool your pool with a heat pump. The Aqua Cal Heat Wave H155 can cool as well as heat your pool with the flick of a switch. The cooling side of the heat pump operates at 83,000 btu’s.
At that rate of cooling, it takes approximately 19 hours to cool a 25,000 gallon pool 10 degrees. This is quick cooling by any standard, and 10 degrees can be the difference between cool and cook. If your pool heat pump needs replacing, this unit is worthy of your consideration.
Solar Pool Heaters Can Cool The Pool Too
During the hottest part of the summer, running the solar system at night can cool a pool to a more refreshing swimming temperature – down several degrees in one night if the conditions are right. Also, if your pool is too warm, leave the solar blanket off at night to allow more heat to escape.
Ice is Nice
You can cool your pool with ice if you add enough of it. Cubed ice cools quicker than blocks but either way you’re going to need tons of it. One of the contributors to the Myth Buster’s forum calculated it would take 5,600 pounds of ice to cool a 25,000 gallon pool 5 degrees.
Depending on the size of your vehicle and the condition of your back, you could easily collect 560 10-pound bags of ice with only 6 or 7 trips to the supermarket.
The Pool Cooler
This simple and ingenious device uses evaporation to lower the temperature of your pool. The main component is a three foot long, 1 ½ inch diameter plastic pipe with multiple holes drilled vertically into the upper half of the pipe. Water is diverted through the holes and creates a misting effect that produces evaporative cooling.
According to the manufacturer, -After the initial installation of the adapter to the water return line (less than 2 minutes), The Pool Cooler connects and is fully functional in less than 30 seconds.
Over the course of a week, this nifty device will reduce the temperature of a 30,000 gallon pool by 5 degrees when the air temperature is 94 – 99 degrees. At $29.95, you could probably afford to install more than one.

General Home Improvement Considerations – Setting Up Misters
If you live in a warm climate where summers can get well above 100 degrees then maybe you have considered various home improvements to limit the heat. There are many things you can do such as install retractable awnings, efficient shades, and perhaps even misters, yes, a misty patio could be in your future, cooling you off and making your summers not only bare-able but also quite enjoyable as well.
One system that works very well is a misting fan, as just a little bit of water in a mist fan can lower the ambient temperature drastically. Most of these systems are pretty straightforward; the fan will oscillate, while shooting out mist and it can keep an outdoor patio room of about 1000-1200 square feet a lot cooler. If you had an air conditioner that was to do the same thing the amount of energy it would use would be far greater than a really small pump and a decent fan.
Interestingly enough you can do this yourself, as it really isn’t that difficult although you need to realize that the mister system cannot leak water on the electric fan motor. You don’t want to electrocute yourself or cause a fire. If you are not mechanically inclined you can buy; A Windchill Misting Fan. These are available at Lowe’s or Home Depot, and they are not too terribly expensive.
There are quite a few differences in quality however and you need to shop around a bit and not go for the cheapest unit you can find. Many are made with parts from China and they are not built in the US. Most importantly you need a good length of connecting house 6 to 10 feet. And I recommend a system that has four nozzles and puts out about three quarters of the gallon to 1 gallon or more per hour. Much more than that and it will make everything wet and soggy. Please consider all this.

Misting Systems For a More Comfortable Patio
If you live in a part of the country that could benefit from having a cooler patio and don’t mind a little extra humidity, then misting systems are the perfect solution for you. In areas of the southwest, the heat index can get so high that it is really a deterrent from going outdoors.
There is nothing worse than feeling stuck inside when you could be enjoying your patio or gazebo if it weren’t for those triple digit temperatures. Well, you wouldn’t have to suffer through that kind of heat if you had installed a misting system for your home or patio. You already know how the temperature on your covered patio is less than the direct sun, but you might be amazed by how much cooler it could be.
If you could achieve a drop in temperature of between 25-35 degrees, would you be interested? Yes, that is actually how much of a change a mist system can create. There are a few factors that affect that number, but it is possible.
One thing that will make that number vary is the humidity in your area. Mist systems work best in areas where the humidity is low. This is why they are popular in areas of the west and southwest desert regions, where humidity may be in the teens or even single digits during certain parts of the early summer months.
Misting systems work by creating very small droplets of water that cool the air and your body as they evaporate. This is why they work best in climates with little humidity. Consider what happens in a greenhouse. If the water vapor is kept locked inside, the air becomes very humid and the temperature can rise as well. You will find that your mist system feels best when there is a slight breeze or is drier outside.
The process whereby the water in the misting system lines is converted to droplets is called atomization. These atomized water droplets can be as small as 5 microns in diameter. This very small size is what allows them to evaporate and do the cooling. Now, you can achieve even greater cooling effect and efficiency if you also install a high pressure pump. This causes the pressure in your lines to increase up to 1,000 psi. This increased pressure actually allows your misting systems nozzles to atomize the water into ever smaller droplets. Smaller droplets equals quicker evaporation and better cooling effect.
One last point to consider is installing your patio mist system. For some models, you can simply buy them off the shelf at your local home improvement warehouse and put them up in about 4-6 hours time. If you need help or would like a professional to do the work right, expect to pay about 30% more. All in all, it is a matter of preference. If you have a smaller size patio or space you are going to be working with a professional might not be necessary.
Looking into mistings systems is probably one of the best ways to cool your patio and keep in mind that a patio misting system will drop the temperature way down in the summer.

How to Build An Outdoor Mister Fan
Do It Yourself Outdoor Mister Fan
These instructions show you how to setup a low-pressure misting ring on a portable household fan to build your own outdoor mister fan. This setup allows you to create an effective mister fan using the water pressure from your garden water spigot. It’s great for cooling one or two people on your patio. It can also be used to cool off your dog or other pets, or even a small chicken coop or rabbit hutch.
What you will need:
1. Misting Ring with a low-pressure tubing connector
2. Low-pressure mister fan adapter kit
(includes low pressure hose, faucet adapter, zip ties, 1/4-inch push lock fitting for the misting ring).
3. Fan
4. Extension cord
5. Electrical Outlet with a GFCI circuit breaker
6. Nearby hose bib water faucet.
The mist ring and the low-pressure mister fan adapter kit can be purchased separately, or together in the Outdoor Mister Fan Kit.
The faucet adapter should already be installed on the tubing, but if not, simply press the tubing into the small end of the adapter. It’s a tight fit, so if you have difficulty doing this by hand, use pliers to help push the tubing in.
If you purchased your adapter kit with a misting ring, a push lock fitting will already be installed on the ring. If you bought the mister fan adapter kit separately, it comes with a push lock fitting that you will have to install on your misting ring. If the fitting doesn’t already have teflon tape wrapped around it, you’ll need to wrap it two or three times, then install the fitting onto the misting ring.
Push the tubing firmly into the push-lock fitting, then gently pull back to ensure the tubing is secure in the fitting.
For our demonstration, I’ll be using an inexpensive box fan I bought at Home Depot a few years ago. Lay the fan flat, then center the mist ring over the exhaust side of the fan, with the nozzles pointing away from the fan.
Attach the misting ring to the fan using zip ties that came with the low-pressure mister fan adapter kit. Bend the zip tie first, which will make it easier to thread around the ring and the grid of the fan shroud. Pull the ties tight, then snip off the ends to keep things neat. You can set the fan upright now, making sure the mist ring is secure.
Plug the fan into a GFCI-protected electrical outlet. A GFCI outlet is the kind with a black “Test” and a red “Reset” button. These outlets trip when there is a “ground fault,” which occurs when the electrical current finds an alternate path to ground. For instance, it might try to travel through your body if you’re foolish enough to be standing in a puddle of water. Don’t be foolish – always be extremely careful when working with electricity in the presence of water. In modern homes, electrical outlets on the outside of the house are usually on a GFCI circuit or are GFCI outlets. In many homes, the entire GFCI circuit is controlled by a GFCI outlet in the garage. Be sure to check that it is working properly before connecting your mister fan.
Connect the tubing with the faucet adapter to the water faucet.
After plugging the fan in and turning it on, you can turn on the water to start the misting. Now you can cool off with your portable mister fan!
Choosing a Greenhouse Watering System
As you build or set up your greenhouse, one important item to include is a water system of some kind. It is much easier to install faucets and drains before building begins, rather than trying to find a watering solution later. Regardless of the type of watering system you use, you should have a floor that drains well. Puddles are unsanitary and dangerous.
There are several types of watering systems that work well in a greenhouse. Each one has specific benefits or weaknesses, so you should explore the options before investing in a watering system.
Hand watering can be both easy and effective, since you can deliver water directly where needed. With a watering can, or hose and nozzle, you can deliver a flow of water anywhere from a fine mist to a high volume. A watering wand is needed for high-hanging plants and baskets.
Drip irrigation systems have many strengths. They conserve water, since flow is regulated and timed. Their weakness is the possibility of the individual nozzles or drippers clogging. There are many systems on the market, and they are very easy to put together. These systems consist of many small tubes branching from a pvc pipe, each one delivering water to an individual plant or container. The whole system can be connected to sensors and timers for an automated system.
If you have a greenhouse with beds along the walls, then a perforated or drip hose may work well. These hoses have tiny holes that allow water to ooze out slowly. The hose is simply laid along plants rows in the bed, and can be connected to a timer for interval watering.
Mat watering is a good system if you have many plants in various sized pots. A thick mat is placed over poly on the bench, and one end is set into a gutter filled with water. Capillary action keeps the mat wet, and the plant pots, with large perforations on the bottom, take up the water in the same way. Many garden suppliers carry these mats. Their downside is they will eventually clog with algae.
Misting is an efficient way to keep seedlings moist. A pipe with fine nozzles can be set up over a row of plants or seedling trays. This is an efficient way to keep cuttings moist that you are propagating. It also helps maintain humidity, since some of the fine spray will evaporate. In turn, this cools the temperature inside the greenhouse.
Misting is not a good way to water large plants, since constantly wet foliage encourages mold, and the root systems do not get the needed deep watering. Misting systems can be set up with electronic timers, programmed to mist throughout the day at set times and for set periods.
As you research watering systems in detail, you may find that a combination of systems will be needed, depending on how you intend to use your greenhouse. Watering can be a time consuming job in the greenhouse, and the health of your plants depends on it. Regardless of which system or systems you use, keep a close watch on your plants, and be aware of their water needs at all times.

Fountain Parts – Cleaning, Care For and the Differences in Fountain Parts
I recommend everyone that has a Misting Fountain, uses Mist Maker parts, and many Waterfall Fountain users, to read and print out this page for future reference. This article will help increase the life of your Mist Maker and Mist Fountain. Some of what you will find on this page include, but is not limited to:

Everyone calls a Mist Fountain and a mist unit [fogger, mister, mist maker] by different names. For our mutual benefit we’ll address them as follows:
- a Fountain is the whole thing – the fountain stand, fountain bowl, ceramic disc, mist maker unit, power adapter – all of it together make a Mist Fountain.
MISTING UNIT or MIST MAKER w/ LED ROTATING LIGHTS
- some call this a fogger, mist maker, fog maker, fog unit, or mister. This fountain part sits in the bottom of a Fountain Bowl. It has a row of LED lights around the edge, and a ceramic disc in the middle. We call this entire part, with a 16mm or 20mm ceramic disc in it, a Mist Maker or Mist Unit
- There is a Standard Mist Maker that has 12 LED lights but does NOT have an inline controller and usually comes with a 16mm ceramic disc, but some have the 20mm disc in them.
- Another Mist Maker Unit is the 16 Mode Inline Control Unit with 3 Speeds. You can adjust the colors to all red, all blue, all yellow, ect, or adjust them to rotate all the colors, or just the blue and yellow, or just red and blue, and so on. The 3 speeds adjust the rotation from a slow fade to a strobe effect. The 16 mode Inline Control Mist Maker may or may not come with a wireless controller that allows you to sit on the couch and change the colors such as changing channels on your tv.
AC POWER ADAPTER TRANSFORMERS
- supplies the power to your Mist Unit and your Fountain
- Standard Current AC Adapters
To identify your adapter, look at the label on the back of it
INPUT: 110V – 120V 60Hz
OUTPUT: AC 24V [beside of the 24V will be a number between 500 and 1200 which is the strength of the output of the adapter]
Which Power Adapter To Use With Which Mist Maker
- IF your ac adapter is at least a 750m, it is the proper strength to work with a Mist Maker with an Inline Controller, 3 Speeds and 20mm Ceramic Disc. The higher output [higher the number] your adapter has, the more mist your fountain will create. So if you have an AC Adapter with 1000m output AND your mist maker uses a 20mm ceramic disc, you will get awesome misting effects!
- When manufacturers make AC Adapters and Mist Maker Units, they make them TOGETHER, to work TOGETHER. So if you have a 900m or 1000m output, but you replace your mist maker, you may notice a little decrease in the amount of mist you achieve.
- If you have an ac power adapter with an “OUTPUT” of 500m, 550m, 600m or 650m, you need to use the Standard Mist Unit with NO inline controller
- To use the 16 mode Inline Control Mist Maker, you need an AC power adapter with an OUTPUT of at least 750m.
Other high AC ADAPTER OUTPUTS include: 830, 900, 950, 1000, OR 1200, are compatible with the 16 mode Inline Control Mistmaker with 3 speeds whether it has the wireless controller with it or not. If your ac adapter has an OUTPUT of 24v 500 – 700, IT WILL WORK ONLY A SHORT TIME with a 16 mode Mist Maker Unit with Inline Control, or a Misting Unit that has a Wireless Controller. One of these mist makers MAY work for 2 months, or a month, or a week, or not at all if the ac adapter OUTPUT isn’t high enough [which means it is not strong enough for the mist maker].
AC/DC POWER ADAPTER TRANSFORMERS
Look at your power adapter where the label is. Look a few lines down where the INPUT AND OUTPUT is listed.
An AC/DC ADAPTER will list something similiar to this….
INPUT: AC120V 60Hz
OUTPUT: DC24.0V 800mA
This adapter WILL NOT WORK with regular misting units. The proper mist maker must be made to work with DC power. This simply means that it changes over from House Current [AC] to Battery Current [DC] If you try to use a DC power adapter with an AC mist maker, it might work for 30 minutes, or maybe a week, but more than likely it will burn your mist maker up within a few minutes.
If you do have, or purchase, an AC/DC Power Adapter and Mistmaker unit, they will work with any Misting Fountain as long as you use the Mist Maker that is for an AC/DC Adapter.
- If you have an AC/DC Power Adapter and can’t find an AC/DC compatible mist maker unit, you can replace BOTH adapter and mist unit with regular ac powered parts
- Find DC Power Adapter and the DC Mist Maker Units on our Fountain Parts page. These are for indoor use, you just can’t mix the 2 together. Our AC/DC powered combo is a very good choice if you are looking for a mistmaker and adapter and want the MIST ONLY, and lots of it.
JUST A COUPLE MISTING FACTS
- IF all your LED lights work on your mist maker but you have no mist- your First Step should be to change the ceramic disc
- If you have NO Mist and NO Lights
- you need a Mist Maker OR
- you need an AC adapter OR
- you need both the AC Adapter and the Mist Maker Unit OR
- make sure the power outlet you have your fountain plugged into works!
NEVER touch the [top] flat sides of the disc with your fingertips.
#1 reason why a mist unit is not misting correctly is because you have touched the disc with your fingertips, cleaned with an abrasive soap, or scratched the disc with something.
#2 reason why a mist unit is not misting correctly is due to improper cleaning of the ceramic replacement disc, mist maker unit, or even your fountain bowl.
CERAMIC REPLACEMENT DISCS
NEVER TOUCH THE DISC WITH YOUR FINGERS- I can’t stress that enough, but I hear of peple touching the disc and then they call me wanting to know why the New Ceramic Disc they just ordered from me doesn’t work! My first question is always “DID YOU TOUCH THE DISC WITH YOUR FINGERS?” 95% of the time, that is the answer I get. So one more time DO NOT TOUCH THE CERAMIC REPLACEMENT DISC WITH YOUR FINGERS !
- the oils from your fingertips can ruin your replacement disc, a new disc or old one. The DISC is what makes the mist!
- Best way to clean the disc – take it out of the mist unit IF you have a key tool. [see below]
A good replacement ceramic discs come with a black rubber protective washer around the disc. Place a soft paper towel between your fingers/hand and the new disk to remove the protective black rubber. …let the towel be between your fingers and disc at all times. The solid white side goes facing UP toward you.
IF YOU HAVE A KEY TOOL FOR DISC REMOVAL
A keytool comes with all new replacement Discs [or it should, if one doesn't come with the disk, then DON'T buy it!]. Don’t touch the disc with your bare hands! but take the disc out of the mist unit carefully using the key tool
- Touch only the outer edges of your ceramic disc.
- Wet a cotton swab or soft cloth with gentle soap and water and clean both sides of the disc.
- Take the disc out occasionally to clean it IF you have a key tool for that purpose
- clean the top of the disc regularly [see below]
- Completely dry the ceramic disc before putting back into mist unit.
DO NOT try to take the disc out with anything but the key tool
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A KEY TOOL
- Wet a cotton swab with gentle soap and water
- GENTLY clean the top of the disc.
- Do Not touch the top of the replacement disc with anything else, especially your fingertips
- the oil from your fingertips can damage the disc…then it will not mist.
Clean the disc weekly if used daily for best results.
Different Sizes and Colors of Ceramic Replacement Discs
-16mm disc -about the size of a dime when IN the mist unit
-20mm disk -about the size of a nickel when IN the mist unit
-20mm discs create more mist than the 16mm
- Replacement discs come in different colors – gold or silver color or white
The white discs are a bit better replacement discs. With proper care they will work a bit better and last a bit longer.
CLEANING THE MIST UNIT-FOG MAKER UNIT
- Wet a cotton swab with gentle soap and water.
- GENTLY clean around each of the LED lights around the outer edge of the Mist Maker Unit.
- Clean the ceramic disc while you are at it
OR LIKE THIS
- You can put the mist maker unit in a bowl of soapy water to clean it and clean it same as above. Be Careful! I’ve broke one of the LED lights off when cleaning the mist maker unit. I really wanted to get that baby clean! But I used that mist unit and the same disc for at least 6 more months, everyday!

CLEANING YOUR FOUNTAIN BOWL, MIST UNIT, AND DISC TOGETHER
YOU MUST Keep the water and the Fountain Bowl clean. Everyone’s home environment is different, so adjust your cleaning times accordingly.
The easiest way to clean your fountain bowl is in your kitchen sink.
- Run soapy water in sink
- unplug adapter from the wall and mist unit
- You may want to dip some water out of the bowl before lifting the bowl out of the fountain stand
- Carefully pick your bowl up and out of the fountain stand and carry to the sink.
- Dump the dirty water out
- put your bowl and mist unit in the dish water – keep end of cord out of water!
- wash it – use cotton swabs for mist unit and disc
- dry with soft cloth
- put fountain back together
- add clean water to bowl
- Enjoy
White Rings Around Your Found Bowl?
Now the folks that are suppossed to know about these things say DO NOT USE DISTILLED WATER IN YOUR FOUNTAIN! They say that you do need some minerals in the water to make your fountain function correctly.
So, when you get that white ring around your fountain bowl that is caused by Mineral Deposits In The Water [and you will get it] clean it off like this…..
- Use white Vinegar to remove any rings or stains from your fountain bowl caused by mineral deposits. Take a clean cloth and place it over the top of a bottle of white vinegar. Now turn the bottle upside down to get the cloth wet with vinegar. Use that vinegar soaked cloth and wipe the white ring off your fountain bowl. It is simple and efficient.
I personally use regular tap water, aka city water in all my fountains.
USING SCENTED OILS IN A MIST FOUNTAIN
- I Do Not Recommend Using Scented Oils in a Misting Fountain, [simply because many people use too much oils and don't change water, or clean the mist maker and ceramic disc as often as they should when using scented oils] but many people do and it is a great way to use your fountain as a Fragrance Diffuser in your home. BUT, Use Lightweight Oils ONLY. You must change the water, clean your fountain bowl, mist maker unit, and ceramic replacement disc more often if you use oils in your fountain.
- Use ONLY a couple drops oil per clean bowl of water. You will clog your mist unit up and/or the ceramic disc with too much oil. That is not saying you can add a couple drops of oil each time you add water! It means only one or two drops each time you dump all the water out of your fountain bowl and clean all the parts as instructed above. Then fill your fountain bowl back up with clean water, then add one or two drops of scented Fragrance Oils – Lightweight Oils ONLY – like those found on MyFountainDesigns Custom Blend Fragrance Oils Page.
HOWEVER, Real Essential Oils can be added as desired

Intermittent Misting Systems – How to Minimize Leaching of Nutrients From Cuttings
Intermittent mist was a great revolution in propagating plants. It enabled the propagator to quickly and cost effectively produce many plants at a time. However, with the benefits comes negative impacts on the nutrients that are within the cuttings. Not knowing how your cuttings are performing can cause them to form roots very slowly, not form roots at all, or cause them to die.
Unrooted cuttings rely on their reserves of nutrients to help the cutting survive until they form roots. Until the cuttings actually form roots, they do not absorb new nutrients from the rooting media. The cuttings get these reserves from the parent stock plant the cutting was originally taken from.
Cuttings absorb nutrients from the rooting media or potting media once the roots have formed, but until the formation of roots has completed, leaching of the nutrients from within the cutting is possible. Hardwood cuttings tend to be more susceptible to leaching than softwood cuttings because the softwood cuttings retain more nutrients in their cell walls which make the nutrients harder to leach out. The level of nutrients in the cuttings is highest when first taken from the stock plant, declines as the cutting is rooted, and increases again once roots develop.
Nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron and boron are the most likely nutrients to be leached out of cuttings while they are under mist. The result usually will be first seen as foliar deficiencies. These deficiencies may be yellowing of the leaves, spotting, and other symptoms.
Most small plant propagation nurseries do not have the facilities to properly test for nutrient leaching. So what should you do?
- Be sure the stock plant you will be taking your cuttings from is healthy and well fed with fertilizer before actually taking the cuttings. This will ensure that the cuttings you do take will have the maximum amount of nutrients in them. Ensuring the cuttings have high nutrient levels will increase your odds of them surviving past the critical stage of when the unrooted cutting turns into a cutting with roots that is able to absorb new nutrients from the soil.
- Do small scale tests and record your findings. Add a small amount of slow release fertilizer to your rooting media. This will ensure the cutting will have nutrients available when it needs them. Too little fertilizer is better than too much! Note which plants do best and the amount of fertilizer you used. Good record keeping will enable you to duplicate the process when you find the one that works. Your records will also keep you from making the same mistakes over and over again!
- Do not over mist. Over misting will leach the nutrients from the cuttings much faster. You want to keep the leaves of the cutting moist but not too wet. On the other hand, never let the cuttings wilt during the misting process.
OK, I can hear you thinking…why not use liquid water-soluble fertilizer like Miracle Grow? A few reasons.
- It leaches out of the rooting media quickly.
- Some cuttings do not do well when the fertilizer is applied to the leaves or stems.
Paying careful attention to your stock plants nutritional health before taking cuttings is one of the easiest methods you can do to be sure your cuttings have the nutrients available to them during the rooting process.

Replacing Lowes or Home Depot Mister Nozzles
If you have a low-pressure (household water pressure with no booster) misting system made of components from Home Depot or Lowes, and it uses metal nozzles, you probably have Orbit “blue” misting nozzles – brass mister nozzles with a blue o-ring and a 10/24 thread. These have a .014 orifice, and are sized in between our AmFog nozzles with a .016 or .012 orifice. We usually recommend our AmFog brown .016 10/24 mister nozzles as a replacement, but the black o-ring .012 10/24 nozzles will also work and will save some water with a slightly finer mist and a flow rate of about 1/2 gallon per hour.

Outdoor Mister System Maintenance
Although they don’t demand a lot of care, you have to conduct some periodic upkeep to make certain your outdoor mister will operate properly when you’ll be needing it. In the Fall, it simply means draining the water from the system as well as disconnecting the system for the winter. You might also cover the pump or bring it indoors to protect it from the elements.
In Springtime, just before the Summertime temperature happens, you’ll need to hook up the lines, check the pump (or water source) to see that it’s functioning, and check your mister lines for leaks. If your mister system utilizes stainless steel mister line or copper tubing, it shouldn’t be much of a issue. Just take a look at the joints and connectors for leaks. If you’re working with plastic lines, you’ll want to test the whole system for cracks and breaks.
The next thing to carry out is to confirm the mister nozzles aren’t clogged. If you’re living in an area that has hard water, the nozzle may be blocked by mineral deposits. It may be feasible to just simply clean the debris off the surface of the mist nozzle, but if the deposits are within the mister nozzle spray hole, you can try to clean them by soaking the nozzles in lime remover. This may or may not work, and you might find that once the nozzles are unclogged, they are worn out and not spray as well as they used to. What a lot of professional mister system dealers do is just change out all the nozzles because it’s less difficult and takes a lot less time than to attempt to clear out each misting nozzle, and the cost of mister nozzles is pretty low when you purchase them in bulk from Outdoor Mister Nozzles.
